Quality Reds and Whites

The province of Cuneo has been the home of fine wines since the earliest times, and now days the great wines of the Langa and Roero are prized and covered the world over: full bodied, smooth red wines, rounded and fragrant white wines, sweet and inviting dessert wines. The entire province is particularly suited to vine cultivation and provides wines of such quality that they are unrivalled the world over. The king of wine Barolo Docg, which comes from the Nebbiolo grape originates from a limited hilly area made up of eleven communes in the Langhe area. It was first invented by the Marchioness Giulia di Barolo, and her castle still today houses the Ethnographic and Enological museum, the wine needs to be aged for three years in oak casks before it can be bottled. It has a dry, full-bodied and distinctive taste with hints of white truffle, dried mushroom, dried rose and forest fruits. Barbaresco another fine Docg wine originating from the Langhe hills, requires two years of ageing in wooden casks. It has a deep ruby red colour, with a rounded bouquet reminiscent of violets and woodland undergrowth, with an almost spicy hint and a pleasantly bitter after-taste. The Dolcetto vine is the most widely cultivated type of vine and it has always been considered to be an uncomplicated wine for drinking on a daily basis. It has a simple, rustic character, with a ruby red colour and a fragrant bouquet, ideal for drinking with all kinds of dishes. Barbera is a hearty full-bodied wine ideally drunk with many typical local dishes, it has a bright ruby red colour and a violet hue, with a delightfully fulfilling taste with a slightly acidic note which gives it added fragrance and freshness. The province not only abounds with red wines, there are also several white wines, the most important of which is Arneis, an ancient vine stock, with a wonderfully delicate bouquet, the colour of which is pale yellow with greenish or golden hints, and a delightfully dry taste. There are also a host of other fine white wines produced in the province such as: Favorita, Freisa, Grignolino, Pelaverga, and Brachetto, all the fruit of long tradition, as well as a series of wines that have been more recently introduced, but of a quality which matches that of their older counterparts.
